American Apparel - swim sale

American Apparel is having a swim sale, just in time for people headed south for March break.

In all honesty, I'm having trouble posting this ad because of the sexualization (is that a word?) of a pre-pubescent girl.

American Apparel's reputation is built on provocative campaigns like this one.

What do YOU think?
Do you find the photo in this ad offensive?
How does it make you feel about shopping at American Apparel?

  1. i don't see it as any different than calvin klein ads, except better since it's more realistic and less airbrushed.

then again, it doesn't make me want to buy the clothes particularly.

she doesn't look all that pre-pubescent to me. Definitely a teenager but not a tween.

I don't care much for the AA ads to be honest. I don't think they are all that well done, but I'm not a teenage boy, isn't that who they are marketing to?

  3. She definitely looks the same age as the 11-13 yr-old girls in my neighbourhood.

If they're marketing to teen boys, they should ask West49 for help. I haven't seen any boys/men at AA whenever I've been by. Have you?

  4. Actually, many of the print ads featuring this same girl make a point of saying she's 18, which I find amusing. She looks pubescent to me though; it doesn't take a huge stretch of the imagination ... maybe we're all too used to mature-looking teens from film and television.

  5. She probably is 18. The problem is they wanted he to look much younger in the ad.

  6. It reminds me of the issue with the whole heroin chic trend a few years ago. I am not feeling it and frankly, it does make my iffy about American Apparel.

The ads for AA are just so unappealing to me. When I walk in the store, the pictures on the wall make me feel almost uncomfortable.
