Dear Bargainista - #9

Connie from Toronto writes:
Hi Bargainista!
I thought you might be able to help us. My husband was quite devoted to the wrinkle-free/iron-free khakis from The Gap, but they no longer make them. Have you found any other easy-care khakis in your travels?

Thank you,
Connie
•••

Hi Connie.
I did some “fishing” and here’s what I came up with to solve your husband’s dilemma:

Tilley Endurables has a whole line of men's wrinkle-free khakis and other pants.

Orvis is an established American company who sells wrinkle-free chinos.

Turns out Lee jeans also makes a pair. They’re sold on Amazon.com.

Finally, just in case the above aren’t suitable, the ever-dependable Dockers also has their own version of sold on Pricegrabber.com.

Hope this helps. Let me know what you find.

Happy shopping,
Mich (from Chicago)

Toronto Fashion Bloggers’ Brunch V: recap

Today I went to Toronto Fashion Bloggers’ Brunch V. We met at Il Gusto. Decent food and reasonable prices but a cozy spot like this is meant for parties of 2 or 4, not groups of 10 or so, like us. ; )

Other bloggers in attendance were:
• Adrian (poster designer) from Fashion Verbatim
• Anita from I want - I got
• Carolyn from the Toronto Fashion Incubator
• Danielle from Final Fashion
• Gina from Keep on Shopping
• Henna from Canadian Beauty
• Tiffanie (event organizer) from TorontoStreetFashion.com

Discussions revolved around Toronto Fashion Week from the perspective of the audience, the media and the publicists; and, discussing the where fashion and social media collide.

As for Toronto Fashion Week, The highlight was learning about Pat McDonagh’s show. It was a celebration of her 40 years in the biz. The theme of her show was inspired by An Inconvenient Truth. Ironically, her clothing was made from synthetic fabrics and often paired with fur. Most intriguing was her use of penguin motifs on formal wear. Not sure it’s my thing but according to my fashionista friends, her loyal fans lapped it up. I quite like the coat in the photo but you wouldn’t catch me in a fur hat.

And as for social media, we discussed MySpace (“so last year”), Facebook (“it’s where everyone is now”) and LinkedIn (“the place to be for professional networking”); controlled vs. uncontrolled communication; and, bloggers as trusted sources of information.

By the way, I’m booking the restaurant for TFBB VI. Suggestions welcome.

Super Cities Walk for MS; Ding dong, Avon calling

I’ve worked with Giselle for five years. She’s a spunky go-getter who excels in everything she does, a real people person.

Next month for the fourth year in a row, Giselle is participating in the Super Cities Walk for MS. Last year she raised $5,200 and this year she’s trying to raise $10,000. You can help her reach her goal by sponsoring her now.

Giselle is also an Avon sales rep. on the side. If you’re going to buy Avon and want the best service, e-mail Giselle. She’s on the ball. She’s often giving away great gifts with purchase, no matter how big or small. And service is always with a smile! I’m thinking of buying some Foot Works foot care goodies.

In addition to cosmetics and gift items, Avon gives back to the community. It recently launched the Hello Tomorrow Fund. From April-September, Avon will recognize one individual each month who has helped empower woman and make a difference for people who have been touched by the breast cancer, with a $5,000 reward.

Think it’s time you consider learning more about Avon? Contact Giselle and see for yourself. The next deadline for orders is April 10.

Dear Bargainista - #7

Mish from Toronto writes:
I want to get a HOT bar set...something that I can have for a really really long time with a classic look?

I like the stuff at William Ashley and will probably go there, but if you have any other suggestions, that would be great.
•••

Hi Mish,

You’ve got great taste. I’d definitely check out William Ashley.

Mich (my fashionista sis) has the following suggestion: “To me, a good vintage set is best. It has more character and unique qualities.”

She’s amazing at scoring finds at antique shows and sales. Her last find was an old chair she had remodeled. It’s amazing and cost a fraction of the price of what she would have paid for a new chair of the same quality and style.

You should also check out The Main Course on Avenue Rd. (map). If you’re looking at mix ’n match, they have a bargain basement. Sometimes you can find entire sets and other times odd pieces or partial sets at great prices.

Try it out and let me know what you think. Leave a comment.

Cheers,
Eden

Are you Coach worthy?

Yesterday, while I was at Yorkdale, I walked passed Coach. The doors were shut, the store was hopping and there was a big line of customers waiting patiently outside.

I walked over to see what was going on. One man told me it was just a normal day at Coach. Not! I’ve been by enough times to know they doors are usually open and line-ups aren’t the norm. Another woman showed me a postcard she received as a spring promo with 25% off merchandise from March 18-March 25.

How’d you get one of those?” I asked.
“It came in the mail,” she explained.
“We’ll I thought I was on the list. Wonder why I didn’t get one?” I said.

Oh well, since I’m not in the market for a new Coach bag, I moved on. About half-hour later, I walked by again. The doors were still closed. The store was still hopping but only a couple customers were waiting outside.

The door opened. The salesperson let a customer out. I took the opportunity to ask why I hadn’t received a postcard too. I own a Coach bag. I bought it there last year.

“Well,” she explained, “our head office decides who to send promos to, we have 25,000 customers and we can't always send them to everyone.” (Duh! Why not?)

“But I’ve had a Coach bag for almost a year. I’m sure I’m on your mailing list and I’ve never received anything. What about customer loyalty?” I answered. Aren’t I “Coach-worthy” too? I thought to myself.

She told me she’d let me in and not to worry, if I wanted to go in and buy something, I’d get the discount. Unfortunately, as much as I’d love one, I needed new clothes more and sometimes a girl just has to say no, even to a great deal.

If you want a new Coach bag (or other in-store goodies) but you didn’t get a postcard, grab your old Coach bag, head on over, tell them you’re a loyal customer and you want 25% off. Show them you’re Coach-worthy too!

Why I use Twitter and why you should too!

My friends and influencers who share their passion for all things digital, have been a buzz the last two weeks about a new online tool called Twitter.

Twitter is a lot of things to a lot of people. Some love itsome hate it. Some are acting like kids in a candy store. Others are trying to figure this whole thing out.

After a Fashion, second excursion: the metamorphosis

Our second After a Fashion excursion in Second Life (SL) was on Monday, March 12.

There were 9 of us: Catherine, Connie, Joy, June L., June M., Kate, Kathryn, Monique and me.

As usual, we met at Crayon’s SL headquarters. We had a rough start because there were technical problems in SL. A couple of us had to log out and back in again. Some our avatars had trouble moving but all-in-all, we had another successful event. It's wonderful seeing the progress our avatars have made since the first event two weeks earlier.

When you join SL and start creating your avatar, you do have the basics but they have a very “GNubie” look and if you don’t do something about it, you’ll really stand out in the crowd (and not in a good way.) Poor Paradise, she was so homely in the beginning.

It was time for the GNubies to shed their newbie looks. Fortunately, we had the more experienced girls to mentor us and experiment with some new looks in between. It was time to shop for the essentials: shapes, skins and hair.

Full disclosure time...
With help from Katicus, I bought a couple new skins on an earlier trip (they were on sale - cheap! - and went back for a new hairdo.) I also caved and spent some Linden dollars. I’ve included my “before” and “after” pictures.

First stop, Colette’s Body Shop. We saw several groupings on sale (I think they were 11 for L$1,000). I have to admit, I didn’t get the whole shape thing until I read Kate's So-Called Second Life. Katicus and Catherine explained how out-of-the-box avatars are naturally tall and often out of proportion.

Catherine taught us how to measure our avatars. Paradise has a great body. I only wish I had one like her in real life! At 6'2", she was one of the shortest in the group. Art imitating life or what? Some people don’t want take the time figuring out how to give their avatars proper shapes. Others don’t want avatars too tall or human-like. There’s a shape for everyone.

Next stop, Panache Island. We went to Skins by Hose & Queen for skins first. We found free packs of skins high up on the wall. Some of us also practiced our flying - it was a great way to show some of the girls where the freebies were hiding.

Panache Hair was our next stop. It was also the shopping highlight of the evening. (Unfortunately, that was also the time SL crashed on my computer so I missed half the trip.) It’s a large colourful store with all kinds of great hair to choose from. I learned that some hair demos are strange colours like lavender and mauve with orange streaks. (Hair demos I tried elsewhere had funny markings across them.) While Joy had trouble keeping her hair on, Trixie and Satu had a great time finding groovy new doos.

We closed the evening with a trip to the trvia lounge at AOL Pointe Island. It was Catherine’s night - she won two rounds while I was there. Way to go!

On a related note...
I discovered a great podcast today, The Traveling Avatar’s Quick & Dirty Tips (of the Quick & Dirty Tips series). A must-listen for the SL gnubie. Short, sweet and to the point.

Plans for our next “After a Fashion” event are already underway. Stay tuned!

Stop snapping that gum!

Note: I've invited some of my co-workers to write guest posts so they could get a handle on this thing called blogging without the obligation of starting their own blogs. Linda took the challenge. ; )

How to lose me as a customer--keep snapping that gum!

I'll be the first to admit that I can be very neurotic at times--there are way too many sounds that drive me nuts. So how does this relate to retail?

One of my biggest annoyances is gum snapping and/or chomping. Really, I don't want to see, or hear, what you have in your mouth. When I'm shopping, nothing sends me running out of a store faster than a sales person chomping on and/or snapping gum. I'll just find somewhere else to shop.

There's a little store in our concourse that opened a few years ago--the female owner is always snapping her gum. The second I hear it, I'm gone--and so is a likely sale.

For anyone that has any power or influence in training sales people and/or cashiers, chewing gum while working should be banned. Period.

Send me your customer service rants (and raves) or leave a comment.

Threadless March broke sale

One more day to buy a Threadless most t-shirts for US$10 (+shipping & handling) and a free Threadless collector’s drink cosy with every order.

I’m constantly receiving info. about new designs in their catalogue.

Today I bought my son the one I promised him ages ago. It's called Fish Tank, designed by Cameron McEwan.

Say you want to learn more about the designer, just click on his link. You can also learn about other members of the community who bought a tee with his design.

For example, if you go to Cameron’s Fish Tank page, you’ll see pics of people wearing the Fish Tank tee in photos on the right. Click on any one and learn about the person wearing the tee on their own Threadless page - how cool is that?

What I love about Threadless is the way it brings the community together. Apart from designs and writing slogans, Threadless integrates members’ by including their involvement in other sites including personal blogs, deli.cio.us, Flickr, Last.fm and MySpace.

What do you think?

Do you have a Threadless fave? Share your pic with Bargainista.

Jeanne Lottie’s shoes for heart

You probably figured out I haven’t had a lot of time for offline shopping lately. I had a quick visit to the mall with Mish and Bryan during PodCamp Toronto and two recent trips to the Apple store. (Stay tuned for more info.)

All that changed today. I had time to browse some of the new spring styles. Bright red leather ballet flats with floppy bows on the outside and pretty pink leather hearts on the inside caught my eye.

It wasn’t just because this season’s shoes are either flats or have very high heels.

No, it was this pair in particular. They’re special. They have heart.

Why?
Jeanne Lottie designed them for the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
$5 from every pair goes directly to the foundation to help fund world-leading scientific research.

So this spring, have a heart. Buy a pair of these special edition shoes and help save lives.

When?
Now! These babies are moving quickly.

Where?
Available at Jeanne Lottie and select Capezio locations.

What do you think of these shoes?

Are you more likely to buy something if a portion of the sale goes to charity?

Big bags are still hot this spring. But don't let the size of your purse fool you! Don't use it to carry everything but the kitchen sink. Here's my secret - pretend it's a small purse - don't put anything in it you can't fit into one of your smaller bags!

“After a Fashion” a “Canadian girls’ night out” in Second Life 1

Monday, Feb. 26 marked the first “After a Fashion” excursion in Second Life (SL).

Joining hosts Kate Trgovac (Katicus Sparrow) and me (Paradise Wunderland), were:
Catherine Winters
Joy Boyson
June Li
June Macdonald
Kathryn Lagden
Sonja Andic
Michelle Tampoya and Tamera Kremer were missed

We started with a meet and greet at Crayon's SL headquarters. Then we got down to some serious (and some not-so-serious) business - shopping business that is.

Our first stop was Free Dove - a huge clothing store (more like a SL big-box store) where most of the goodies were free for the taking - the glitch was we didn't know exactly what we were getting until we unpacked. (In SL, just like real life, it's gauche to unpack your stuff in busy public places.)

Our last stop was the gazebo at Garden of Hope, a perfect place for unpacking and checking out our new finds. Kate and Catherine taught us how to unpack. What a blast! Everyone tried on their new clothing (my pics are on the right.) It was like playing 3-D Barbie for grown-ups. What fun!

Unfortunately, most of my new outfits were more skanky than fashion-forward. On the bright side, I didn't spend a penny (oops! I meant Linden dollar). I guess even in SL you get what you pay for. ; )

Thanks everyone for joining us on our first “After a Fashion” adventure. Special shout out to Kate and Catherine for guiding us newbies along. We became more confident and knowledgeable about SL after just one group visit.

Stay tuned for details of our next “After a Fashion” event. We have a couple new members and a few spots left. If you're interested in joining the group, send me an email!

Sweet deals at Mendocino

For those of you who shop in The Beach or on Yonge St. just south of Sporting Life, a Mendocino outlet store is probably a familiar site.

For those of you who miss Mendocino’s regular Yorkdale location, have no fear while it's undergoing a reno. from now thru mid-April (according to the Frugal Fashionista.) Mendocino has opened up a temporary outlet location with discounted winter stuff 'til March 31. It's in the strip just past HMV and Lens Crafters on the way to the subway. New stock arrives a couple times a week and the discounts run from 20%-70% off.

Who knows? Maybe the Yorkdale outlet will remain a permanent fixture. That's what happened on Yonge Street when the new Mendocino opened.

If you go, let me know what you find.
