Acccessories shopping on a sunny Saturday

Yesterday I checked out three different accessory stores in the Yonge street strip between Eglinton and Lawrence...

Heidi Ho2
Heidi Ho2 is really one of those rare hidden gems with a small nondescript storefronts. It’s a one-of-a-kind boutique with jewelry, clothing and other accessories that aren't mass produced.

Heidi has impeccable taste and a suggestive sales style others only dream of. She’s so good, I tried things I didn’t even need but am glad I found. I bought a great necklace for 40% off (selected jewelry is on sale) and a Dee...complete by Delicious tee for $20. Heidi definitely won me over. What style!

Accessorize
If you’ve never been to this cheap ’n cheerful accessories shop imported from the UK, you really should check it out. They always have new stuff that you won’t see everywhere else (and even a girls’ line for mother and daughter shopping). I checked out hair accessories and necklaces. The sales help was attentive, not pushy.

I ended up buying some hair clips and realized I didn’t have my loyalty card. No problem, they just looked up my last name on their computer and I got my discount. What service!

Just Cuz
I was never a big fan of this store but bought a gift there ages ago and wanted to exchange it for a higher-priced item. I knew it was past the deadline. But what the hey. Like my grandmother used to say, “nothing but ask”. So I did and bought something four times the price of the original item.

Next I wanted it gift wrapped - well they give away ribbon and tissue paper but you have to buy the bags. I asked if I could have a small box for another item I purchased elsewhere and wanted to include with the gift. They were so rude about it but gave in to my request in the end. Anyone can be bought - my cost $1. What nerve!

Where do you buy accessories? Have some stories to share? Leave a comment.

Apples, lemon and honey: my iMac story

This is the story of how through patience and persistence, I got a new 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac last weekend. [Warning: this is a long post even with major edits. ; ) ]

I’ve only owned Apple computers. The last one I bought was in May 2005 - the day Apple opened it’s first Canadian store. It was a new G5 iMac and at first, it worked like a charm. It was the only Apple computer I owned that ever needed service other than a memory upgrade.

I started having problems last fall. I thought they were related to my Internet service - NOT! The fan hummed and there was a constant buzz whenever the computer was on. Eventually, performance started slowing down too.

A month ago I did some home diagnostics but nothing showed up. I took advantage of my AppleCare service. They did some diagnostics and fixes with me by phone but nothing changed. Off to the Apple store I went...

In a nutshell, I visited the Genius Bar about 8 times, replaced the logic board and ran diagnostics , with AppleCare tech support and on my own.

After several attempts, I couldn’t replicate the problem for the mac geniuses. Even after an overnight diagnostic visit, neither could they. I bought ProCare so I could have quicker service. (I was having anxiety attacks at the thought of being sans computer for a week.) I started feeling like the boy girl who cried wolf.

The service I received was excellent. There were a few exceptions and a bit of misinformation from some of the staff. Overall, the passion the staff share not only for the product but for the customer is what separates the Apple store apart from other local Apple resellers.

A week ago Friday, I had enough. I spoke to a manager, Maheen, who assured me they’d help. I also wanted a plan in case they couldn’t fix my iMac. He wouldn’t provide one. (Throughout the experience, I had been told Apple’s policy is not to replace a computer until it’s had three major repairs, i.e. new hardware.) I didn’t ask for a new computer; I asked for one that worked. I didn’t care if it was 22-month-old iMac or a replacement. I just wanted a working computer and I wanted one soon! I never got angry; just held firm.

He booked an appointment for the next morning and put me in Agatha’s capable hands.

When I arrived (with kids in tow), I asked Agatha about “the plan” in case they couldn’t fix my iMac. She said they’d start “a case” - Apple retail speak for ordering a replacement. Finally! If they could fix my iMac, great. If not, at least the wheels would be in motion. Within minutes, Agatha decided to give me a new iMac but it would take 10 to 14 biz days.

In the meantime, Tyrone - a mac genius - would do his best to patch up my computer in hopes I could use it in the interim.

Tyrone was great. It sounded like there were hardware problems and a software issue stemming from an AppleCare tech support call. He gave me all kinds of tips. More than two hours had passed. I needed to get some lunch into the boys. I left the iMac at the store while we went for a bite.

I returned a couple hours later to pick up my sickly iMac. Tyrone told me he had good news but I had to speak to Taylor. She’d be back in 15 min. Off I went to entertain my uncharacteristically patient boys - ice cream works wonders.

Fifteen minutes later, Taylor gave me a brand-spanking new new 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, with 1GB of RAM, a SuperDrive and a webcam - an upgrade. Good things do come to those who wait! Well sort of...

Went home. Opened the box, pulled out the new iMac. Plugged everything in. Started installing an online software update and guess what? It crashed!

I immediately called the Apple store. They said they were too busy to help me. I called AppleCare. The tech support guy tried helping me on the phone. No change. He told me to go back to the store. And so I did.

Graham, another mac genius checked out my new computer. In his words, it was “D.O.A.” - a lemon. By 7:30 p.m., I received my second new computer of the day and went home.

Where does the honey play into all this?
During this whole debacle, I remained unusually calm. I never raised my voice. I never demanded anything. I was patient and worked with Apple. I was co-operative every step of the way and treated people with the same respect I expected from them. I made it easy for the staff to help me and I was rewarded.
So there you have it, my story about Apples (Apple store/company + Apple iMacs), one lemon and lots of honey. ; )

Seinfeld's ABC gum ... anything for a buck

TV tattle.com is one of my daily must-reads but rarely do I click thru for the articles.

Today, when I saw a link to "Jerry Seinfeld's chewed gum for sale on eBay" I couldn't resist. I've never heard anything so disgusting in the online auction.

Seems the seller, global-garage is a bit of a garbage picker. A couple years ago, he and his buddies met Jerry Seinfeld in Central Park. They parted ways and watched Seinfeld throw something shiny in the garbage. After he walked away, global-garage went over to the garbage can and picked up the shiny papers with the ABC gum. The rest is history in the making.

I've watched every Seinfeld episode at least once but have a hard time remembering the details. So, I did a little digging... I learned this guy has something in common with George Costanza too. In The Gymnast episode, George picks a chocolate eclair out of the garbage and eats it!

Yuck!

How much would you pay for Seinfeld's ABC gum?

Boxing Day believe-it-or-nots

Believe-it-or-not #1
I didn't buy a thing for myself today! I explored a bit of Yonge/Eg early this morning and again just before closing time and picked up a couple items for my guys.

Believe-it-or-not #2
I actually made money shopping at Future Shop! I was surprised to save more money at one of their bricks and mortar stores than on their website. Once I receive the mail-in rebates, I'll be ahead by $2.99 - even after postage. I considered shopping online but wanted to avoid shipping costs and didn't want to wait a week or so for delivery.

Here's what I bought:
Trendnet Wireless-G Router and Wireless-G USB 2.0 Adapter package
Online pricing -
Reg. price: $89.98
Sale price: $54.98
Mail-in rebates: -$45.00
After rebate: $9.98

In-store pricing -
Reg. price: $89.98
Sale price: $35.00
Mail-in rebates: -$45.00
After rebate: -$10.00

Memorex TravelDrive 512MB USB 2.0 Flash Drive
Reg. price: $69.99
Sale price: $13.99
Mail-in rebate: -$8.00
After rebate: $5.99

Regular price: $169.97
Boxing Day price: -$4.01

By the way, if you need a USB wireless adapter for you laptop, let me know. It was more expensive to leave it behind than buy it bundled with the router. Go figure.

Missing you...

My Internet service was shotty to say the least for several weeks but I blamed it on an old house and lots of rain (sometimes it gets into the phone lines and causes problems). And then the unthinkable happened, it stopped altogether. Suffice it to say, after almost four painfully frustrating hours on the phone with Bell Sympatico, I got a new modem and life seems to be looking up.

Ten years ago I wouldn't have cared if I couldn't use e-mail for a day, surf the web or post to my blog. Today, it's a nightmare. The Internet is probably the most sought-after item in the house. Sometimes we have to take a number to use it. (Hey, maybe it's time to get another computer. Apple are you listening?)

Why am I telling you all this... well I hope you'll forgive me for not telling you about...
  • Want warehouse sale
  • Viktor & Rolf at H&M
  • Dish Denim Event at Girl Friday
  • Trunk show at Nathalie-Roze & Co.
  • DKNY winter jacket I bought at Winners' winter wear event - yes, I actually found some awesome designer jackets there!

Winners and losers - part 2

    Bargain alert!!!
Like this great AE bomber jacket? I saw it there today for $140 and at Winners on College for only $49.99 in black, brown and ivory!

I actually had some luck at Winners - I bought a great pair of Roots yoga pants for $29.99. I missed on a another great little AE light-weight down filled jacket though. The lining was ripped and I didn't think the $9 off they offered was enough to pay for the repair. In retrospect, it was a stubborn move, where else would I find a great jacket for $40 even if I had to pay $20 to get it fixed. It even had a nifty iPod pocket and another one for my wallet! Duh!

I'm also really p-oed because they have a knock-off of their own shoe, the Franco Sarto I bought at Capezio, with a lower heel and what appears to be cheaper leather (but I can't say for sure) for only $69! I paid $125 and that was after the coupon for $25 off.

    Winners and losers

Some people have luck with discount department stores. Not me! I once found my husband a great Ben Sherman leather belt for only $25 but that was an exception. I never find anything for myself. Some of my friends have a great knack for sorting through the racks and scoring the latest designer sweater for next to nothing. Oh, I wish I had that kind of patience...

And boy, was my patience tested recently. I tried returning a toy my son received as a gift. Part of the price tag was still on with the store's name and product item number intact. I didn't have the bill and the store didn't want to take it back because they said it was from a past season. They finally offered me $3 and said they would donate the toy to charity. My son decided to keep it and donate it to Sick Kids himself. What a mensch!

I'm used to the no hassle return policy at my neighbourhood Mastermind, so this whole experience took me by surprise but I'm grateful to that other store for making me a proud mom.
