Seinfeld's ABC gum ... anything for a buck

TV tattle.com is one of my daily must-reads but rarely do I click thru for the articles.

Today, when I saw a link to "Jerry Seinfeld's chewed gum for sale on eBay" I couldn't resist. I've never heard anything so disgusting in the online auction.

Seems the seller, global-garage is a bit of a garbage picker. A couple years ago, he and his buddies met Jerry Seinfeld in Central Park. They parted ways and watched Seinfeld throw something shiny in the garbage. After he walked away, global-garage went over to the garbage can and picked up the shiny papers with the ABC gum. The rest is history in the making.

I've watched every Seinfeld episode at least once but have a hard time remembering the details. So, I did a little digging... I learned this guy has something in common with George Costanza too. In The Gymnast episode, George picks a chocolate eclair out of the garbage and eats it!

Yuck!

How much would you pay for Seinfeld's ABC gum?

Dear Bargainista - #4

Conde Nast writes:
As you recommended, I went to
Holt Renfrew to check out their sale.

The bad news
I went this past Sunday but it was too late. There were no Boss suits left except for one. And let's just say if it was the 70's I would have bought it in a heart beat.

The good news – There was indeed an additional 20% off so I managed to pickup a couple of great dress shirts and ties. Regular retail price for all my stuff was $860 (plus taxes) and I paid $307 (all-inclusive). So a pretty decent afternoon for your truly.

I'd also suggest for those shoppers who have kids that go to Holt Renfrew on Bloor, go the science/exploratory toy store on the
1 level so you can pickup something for your kids. We did that and our 3 year old was happily occupied while we shopped.

Regards,

Threadless' sweetheart of a sale

Secret Love - Threadless, Best T-shirts Ever
Threadless - the online community for those who love tees - is having a Valentine's sale.

Buy any two tees with the same design (any sizes) and save $10.

Threadless, isn't your average online store:
• you can submit your own designs, slogans and photos
• community members vote for their favourite designs and slogans
• if your design or slogan receives enough votes, you'll win cold hard cash
the company manufactures winning designs and/or slogans and sells them
• you can earn points and use them to buy tees
• enter competitions to win great prizes, and
• anyone can join in the fun

How's that for user-generated content?

They're on the ball when it comes to customer service too.

If only online shopping was always this engaging. :)

Starbucks - the epilogue

My Starbucks' situation (see three related stories) has some closure.

I received my $15 Starbucks' gift card about a week after I wrote the second post - it didn't take long to use it up. Starbucks held up their end of the bargain and sent me a cheque to cover the dry cleaning bill - almost $70!

I frequent two Starbucks in my neighbourhood because:
• there's excellent service
• it's walking distance

A new one just opened in my office complex. The staff act like they studied The Three Stooges as part of their training program. They opened a month ago and haven't figured out how to charge people who bring their own mugs. Not terribly smart considering their competitor has a set rate. At at least an extra 21¢ per mug, it will be interesting to see how long the novelty lasts. (It doesn't seem like much per coffee, but I did the math. It adds up to an extra new pair of shoes a year!)

Was it worth all the hassle? Well, my purse will never be the same but to the untrained eye, it's clean enough to hang on to for a while.

What would you have done if you were me?

The mane event

After being loyal to the same brand of hair products for far too long, I set out to find something new. Two years later, I still haven't discovered a winner but I may have found next best thing...

I was at Costco a couple weeks ago and spotted TiGi Catwalk shampoo and conditioner. The first one to catch my eye was Fashionista (gee, wonder why?). Since I have colour treated hair (and didn't like the fragrance of Fashionista) I decided to try the oatmeal & honey variety instead.

What initially attracted me was brand recognition. What sold me after the sniff test, was the price: $13.99 for a 750 ml bottle. I've seen the 300 ml bottle in retail stores for $14.99!

Do I love it? Too soon to say. But I will tell you, it comes with quite the pedigree - created by internationally-recognized British stylists, Toni & Guy. I liked it enough to go back to Costco and snap up a bottle of conditioner too.

For more bargains, check out their website for special monthly offers. Currently, they have two freebies (provided you cough up the $9+ for shipping and handling) and some discount packages. Too bad they're not as good at providing product info. as they are promoting their brand online.

Uptown girl's downtown fashion brunch

Today, I connected with some members of the Toronto's fashion blogger community. We met at The Drake for the Toronto Fashion Bloggers' Brunch (TFBB).

There were about 20 fashion bloggers (and friends) representing the local fashion scene including:
• Anita - I want - I got, BlogTO and recent guest columnist
• Danielle - final fashion
• Bianca - a wee bit skint
• Carolyn - Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI)
• Adrian - Fashion.Verbatim
Truc - Deeply Superficial
• Rachel, Sonja and Tiffanie - TorontoStreetFashion.com

We spoke about everything from blogging to fashion design, pr and marketing. One of the highlights was chatting with Truc. She's worked at some places other aspiring fashionistas would only dream about.

Thanks Danielle for all your hard work organizing this event (including the great photo graphic), and to Anita for inviting me.

Coffee, tea or ... magazine?

Second Cup is offering customers free magazines with the purchase of one of their new "me time" specialty drinks. Glen forwarded this e-mail promo:

It's pretty obvious women who read Elle and the likes are the target market for this product launch.

Think the pink colour scheme and chocolate/red berry combos just before for Valentine's Day are a coincidence? Me thinks not. Have a look at their new gift card:
I dug a bit deeper and as it turns out, they're after the yummy mummy crowd. Looks like this campaign is supposed to attract yummy mummy subscribers for their e-mail campaigns.

The contest goes something like this:
• nominate a yummy mummy (it can be you or someone else)
• complete an entry form
• include a brief story about the yummy mummy
• opt in or out of a few e-mail subscriptions
• the winner is selected by a random draw

Seems bizarre since the winner is selected from a random draw and not because her story is the favorite.

I guess they must be on to something. See what Mathew Ingram had to say in the Globe today.

Anyway, if you're yummy mummy think about entering - you may win a $1,500 visit to the spa. Now that's pretty yummy, if you ask me.

What do you think? Will you enter? Have you tried one of their new "me time" treats. Leave a comment and let us know.

Long and leggy

I'm barely 5'3" so when my friend Kathryn asked me If I knew where she could find an outfit for a friend's wedding, I was stumped. You see, Kathryn is 5'11" and few stores cater to women of her stature.

I started going through my closet and found a little black dress I bought for a wedding a couple years ago - the one I had shortened by 8"! I bought it at David Findlay. At that time - in addition to their biz wear - they had a small collection of evening wear.

I also suggested Want because they carry an extensive collection of special occasion dresses.

Along the way Kathryn bought some great separates at Tzatz! and a great Teenflo jacket at Winners. She ended up finding an outfit at The Oyster in Burlington on a referral from her friend Judy.

I have a some other friends like Kathryn. Their biggest complaint about finding clothes are:
• pant legs and sleeves are too short
• limited selection
• boring, matronly clothes

With help from my friend Carol, Kathryn and Cindy, I've compiled a list of stores either specialize in catering to the long and leggy or just happen to carry clothes that fit:

Banana Republic - just introduced tall sizes (US only)
Club Monaco - jeans for women up to 5'10"ish.
David Findlay - great for tailored business suits
Franco Mirabelli - another great place for business attire and special occasions
Gap/Old Navy - tall jeans
Long Legs - great store for tall women with a flare for fashion
Lululemon - where else have you seen yoga pants shortened?
Tallcrest Shoes - shoes starting at size 10-13
Tall Girls Shop - basics, conservative business wear
Tall Like Me - huge selection, including maternity and yoga wear
The Oyster - awesome high-end clothes
Tzatz! - exclusive labels, urban style, sometimes glitzy
Want - hottest fashions, big selection of party dresses
Zara - high fashion, small fit, reasonably-priced

For more tips, check out Tall Women Fashion "411"!

Note: Not all of these stores specialize in tall sizes but they're loved by tall girls anyway. Check them out and let us know what you find. :) Long and leggy? Tell us about your favourite shop.

Dear Bargainista - #2

Conde Nast (Need a Suit Today) writes:
Dear Bargainista,

I love Hugo Boss suits but not the price tag.

So going to Harry Rosen or Holt Renfrew's regular retail stores is not an option unless I don't feed my family for a month....

The only affordable place I know of to get Hugo Boss suits is their Factory Store. Good news is that suits are very cheap there (comparatively speaking).

The bad news is that it's located in Windsor, Ontario. Any suggestions or sales in the Toronto area you can suggest?

•••
Dear Conde Nast,

Today's your lucky day!

Holts just stepped up their sale today (up t0 70% off, see exclusions). Men's suits including Hugo Boss start at $400 and up - I called and checked. geekgirl thinks the sale lasts 'til the end of January.

Harry Rosen has men's suits starting at $599. Currently, there's an extra 25% off men's casual wear and leathers in addition to the current markdowns offered at up to 50% off.

Let me know what you find. Leave a comment.

Toronto's own treasure trove

Note: Bargainista welcomes guest contributor Anita Clarke. Anita writes for the blogs I want – I got and blogTO. She spends excessive amounts of time on the computer.

The Annex isn't a shopping Mecca in Toronto, but there are a few choice shops that should be on everyone's radar. All accessory lovers should know about Trove. It's one of those "hidden gem" type places that are missed by those that only frequent Queen Street and the mall.

Trove started in 2002 with accessories like jewelry, belts, handbags and scarves. After a few years they opened a sister store called Shoon. It focused on shoes and carried brands like Clarks, Faryl Robin, Fly and Indigo. You could also find clothing including designs by local designers Wonderlust and House of Spy. This summer Trove expanded and brought Shoon into the fold, they were together finally.

Trove has a reputation for carrying unique items. The jewelry section is amazing and you can find many exquisite pieces for sale. Guys, this is a great place for gift shopping. You can find handbags for all functions: evening, casual and work. Scarves come in a wide variety of styles for all seasons. During the winter, you can find stylish hats, leather gloves of all colours and cute mitt and scarf sets.

Currently the store is in the mist of winter sales with boots 40%-60% off, clothing 50% off, all winter wear 50% including leather gloves, handbags 25%-50% off, xmas decorations 75%, slippers and PJs 50% off. Some jewelry is on sale but not all.

Trove is one of the best stores for customer communication and appreciation. They have a monthly newsletter, which keeps you up to date on all the happenings that month. It usually includes information on new items, artist profiles and store events. Mailing list members also receive special discounts on Trove products.

Dear Bargainista - #1

In the first of our Dear Bargainista series, Glen writes:

Dear Bargainista,

We have a gift certificate for Oliver Bonacini group of restaurants. Being vegetarian and travelling by TTC, which restaurant should we go to for something special?

Canoe (heard it's mostly just the view)?
Auberge du Pommier (they have horse on the menu - gross!)?
Biff's (name is stupid - sounds like a sports bar)?
Jump (went there 3 years ago, was okay).

Which place has the best deserts?
•••
Dear Glen,

For a great night out - I would choose between Canoe or Auberge. Both are on the subway line, have fantastic service, a provide a nice atmosphere for either a dinner with friends or a lovely night with the significant other.

As both are quite high-end, both would definitely have vegetarian options. Most T-dot 5 star restaurants also offer vegetarian and vegan tasting menus. You do have your choice on informing the host when you make the reservation, which may be a good idea as it will provide the chefs with a head's up, but it really is not necessary - after all, there is a growing number of vegetarians in the city.

Hope this helps. Please do tell me which one you go to. Both of these restaurants are on my top 10 favs in the city.

As far as desserts - both have great options. Auberge has a great bitter chocolate dessie that is oh-so-decadent. Simply divine.

Banana Splits ... bag prices cut in half!

Banana Republic split prices in half (or more) on some big, beautiful leather bags. But hurry up, I think the sale ends Tuesday. At least that's what I heard a staffer at the Bloor St. store tell a stylist while she was shopping with her local-celebrity client.

See the pic of the Sandhurst Tote Bag Purse on the right. I bought it for $169.99. It's regularly $380ish. I saw it on eBay for US$199. I've never spent so much on a purse but I couldn't resist. Should I keep it or sell it off to the highest bidder?

Talk of the town

Okay, I'm the type of girl who rarely makes a birthday wish list. It's only Jan. 9 and I've already added something to mine: Apple's new iPhone.

I kept a close eye on the 'net for Steve Jobs' keynote address at MacWorld.

For ages I'd been hearing rumours about an iPhone. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine something as smart and sleek as the device Jobs unveiled today.

Essentially, it's an all-in-one:
• computer
• cell phone
• iPod
• digital camera
• crackberry, etc. (you get the picture)
...that fits in the palm (no pun intended) of your hand.

There are 4GB (~US$499) and 8GB (~US$599) models.

In the US, Apple has partnered with Cingular and the cost will include 2 years of service. Sweet. I've already signed up for updates but I guess I'll have to wait for news about a Canadian carrier.

Oh, and by the way Steve, my birthday is April 4 and it's a special one. (A girl can dream can't she?) :)

What will you be adding to your birthday list?

Note: updated Jan. 10.

A close friend had a dinner party for her book club just before the holidays. A guest brought her a candle as a gift. Oddly, the price was still left on. She didn't have any use for it but thought it would make a great Christmas gift.

A couple weeks later she was having hair done and gave her colourist the candle as a gift. She remembered to remove the price tag. You can imagine her embarrassment when her friend showed up at the same salon!

The friend saw the candle and said, "That's the same one I gave you for your dinner party."

"No, it's not." my friend replied.

"Yes, it is... I got it as a gift and someone left the price tag on. I didn't like it, so I left the tag on and gave it to you. I thought if you didn't like it either, you could return it and choose something else instead."

Regifting used to be a dirty word coined on a Seinfeld episode. Not any more - even Emily Post gives tips on when it's okay. What do you think?
Did you regift in 2006?
yes, I always do
no, I'd never dream of it
I'll never tell

Want's top 10

Want on Avenue Rd. has a $10 rack! I'm assuming all locations have $10 racks too but I'm not making any promises.

There's some great outfits in the window and the sign says "Almost Free".

Check it out for yourself.

Davids & Capezio renovation sale

Davids' and Capezio's Bloor St. locations are having a renovation sale Jan. 8-13. Save up to 70% off shoes, boots and purses from some of your favourite designers.

Both stores a slated to re-open by March 28, just in time for Spring. (They'll use temp. locations in between.)

What?: Davids' & Capezio's reno sale
When?: Jan. 8-13
Where?: 66 & 70 Bloor St. W. (map)

I just don't understand why:
  • home pages aren't updated;
  • Capezio hasn't sent me a newsletter since I subscribed last September; and,
  • sale news isn't sent to subscribers.
Do you? Leave a comment.
